Abstract

The X-ray photoelectron spectrum of gaseous para-nitroaniline has been obtained using MgKα radiation. The N1s spectrum differs from that of the solid in that one peak is obtained in the nitro region instead of the doublet splitting of 1.8 eV observed in the solid. It is therefore concluded that the recent calculation of Domcke does not agree with experiment as well as was previously believed but that the main conclusion of their work about the existence of negative shake up remains a possibility. The O1s spectrum agrees better with the measurements on the solid, with a peak 2.4 eV to the high binding energy side of the main line possessing a relative intensity of 24%.
