Abstract

Continuous photolysis of furan results in CO, C 2H 2, CO 2, propyne, 1-hexen-5-yne, 2,4- and 1,5-hexadiyne and an unidentified polymer. The identities of the products were determined by mass spectrometric analysis. Flash photolysis of furan gave a transient which decayed with a half-life of about 5 ms. Time-of-flight mass spectrometric analysis indicated that this intermediate was Dewar furan. The possible reaction pathways involved in the photolysis of furan are discussed.
