Abstract

In this paper we will present a number of observations which suggest that the gas phase of tobacco smoke contributes to the development of lung disease. We acknowledge with great thanks the contributions made by our collaborators to the studies to be described. They include Professor Geoffrey Rose of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Professor Tim Clark of Guys Hospital and Professor Brian Thrush at the Department of Chemistry, Cambridge University. Also we thank our long suffering Research colleague, Andrew Chamberlain, from the Addenbrookes Respiratory Physiology Laboratory
