Abstract

Introduction: The mechanisms governing phagocytosis by macrophages remain incompletely understood, although impaired phagocytosis may occur during advanced sepsis. Gap junctions are hexameric arrays of the protein connexin 43 (Cx43) which are localized on the cell membrane, and allow for the transfer of molecules between adjacent cells. The expression and possible role for Cx43 in macrophages remain largely unknown, although transfer of molecules between the phagosome and the cytosol may be required for efficient phagocytosis to occur.
