Abstract
The article presents an update on Europe's ambitious attempt to run its own global positioning system (GPS) system. The first experimental satellite, built by Surrey Satellite Technology and part of the so-called Galileo System Test Bed, will be launched in 2005, quickly followed by up to four other test-craft during 2005-6. Despite several delays and setbacks, the European Space Agency (ESA) has confirmed that full system implementation remains on schedule for 2008.
