Abstract

In-car voice assistants like Google Assistant, Siri, Alexa, and others have become increasingly important modes of communication and control in the car. However, there are seldom any observable in-car user experiences with voice assistants that seem to have been built car-first, i.e. with the car use case in mind as the top one. In this article, we first examine the ways in which voice assistants are integrated into the car. We then explore the top concerns and gaps in the current voice assistant offering in the market and a framework for designing thoughtful user experiences in the car. Finally, this article provides a brief outlook about the future of voice assistant adoption and usage in the car
