Abstract
The contemporary world situation is characterized by two antagonistic tendencies: globalization and polarization. What are the chances for successful development of a small state in such a situation? The thesis of the essay is that the contemporary world situation is favourable for the development of small state if certain conditions are met. For Central European post-communist countries the basic condition is close cooperation during the process of adaptation for integration with the EU. Failure in developing institutionalized cooperation may end with absorption of those countries by the EU instead of their integration within the EU.
