Abstract

Abstract Innovative models of music therapy, including community, resource, wellness, and neurological models, are evolving and shaping new directions for contemporary treatment. Music therapists can be activists for people with mental health conditions and work to reduce public stigma through education and advocacy. This chapter describes future issues for music therapists practicing in adult mental health settings. Topics include manuals, rational drug design, community music therapy, holistic wellness, music-induced harm, and the importance of neuroscience. As music therapists may be at heighted risk for burnout, they should proactively manage stressors to maintain their holistic health.
