Abstract

By the year 2100, it is estimated that the global population will be 10 billion. 100 years ago about 20% of the world's population was urban; by 2010, more than half of the population lived in urban areas, a proportion projected to rise to 70% by 2050.1 Urban conglomerations will increase, turning into megacities with populations in excess of 10 million. In 2013, 24 cities were classed as megacities, the largest being Delhi, Shanghai, Mexico City, New York, and Tokyo, with over 20 million people each.
