Abstract

This chapter argues that we have come to a stage where advanced technology, especially that of genetically engineered foods and animals, is quickening our downfall, as Bacigalupi represents in his novel The Windup Girl, which looks with great focus at the transformation of food and animals in the twenty-third century. In this climate change era, food issues are one of the most urgent problems human beings face. Genetically modified organism (GMO) technologies, having been initially introduced to overcome dire food shortage, turned out to have many negative side effects in reality as well as in the novel. More problematic are unknown dangers of food transformation technology by the profit-driven monopolistic multinational companies, fictional and real, including the demise of human civilization that will result from the avarice of food transformation industries and their technologies, as is represented in the novel.
