Abstract
English has come a long way since its early arrival in Asia as the language of traders. When in December 1600 Queen Elizabeth I granted a monopoly on trade in India to British traders (Ferguson 1996), who would later form the East India Company, she also ensured that English would reach India. The traders paved the way for the missionaries, especially after they were allowed to use the ships of the East India Company from 1659 (Kachru 1983).
