Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to contribute to discernment regarding decisions that could be taken in the present in order to secure a future for Catholic higher education in Ireland at the service of the mission of the Church. The paper begins by critiquing third-level education in Ireland. Then a brief overview is presented of the distinctive tenets of Catholic education and why Catholic education has the potential to challenge and revitalise third-level education as a whole. Finally, the paper reflects on the state of Catholic education in Ireland and some developments are suggested which may be considered to be strategic at this time.
