Abstract
The future of artificial intelligence (AI) holds tremendous promise for addressing urgent environmental issues and promoting sustainability across multiple sectors. As technological progress accelerates, AI applications play a greater role in comprehending, monitoring, and mitigating environmental problems. This chapter investigates the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence's role in environmental sustainability, analyzing both the challenges it poses and the unprecedented opportunities it presents. The chapter begins by describing the expanding influence of AI on the environment. As AI technology adoption increases, so do the energy consumption and computational demands of data centres and AI systems. With data centres significantly reliant on nonrenewable energy sources, the AI industry's carbon footprint is a growing concern. This chapter emphasizes the significance of responsible AI development in order to leverage AI's potential for environmental sustainability.
