Abstract
The NHS in England spent over £9 billion in 2006/07 providing services to people with mental health disorders. The overall service cost of mental health (health, social care and informal care) is £22.5 billion. With consistently high prevalence rates and expected increases in the numbers of people with mental health disorders over the next 20 years, this article looks at what might be done to reduce the future cost of mental health care
