Abstract

The fusion of the membrane-bound dense-core granules of the Merkel cell with a synapse-like structure between the Merkel cell and its associated nerve fiber was observed. This fusion might imply that the tactile sensation by the Merkel cell is mediated by the release of the content of the membrane-bound dense-core granules into the specialized synapse-like structure.
