Abstract

For centuries, philosophers from Aristotle to Hume have recognized the fundamental inseparability of emotion and ethics. In more recent research, business ethicists have explored the relationship between emotion and unethical behavior. In this symposium, we gather scholars in the field of business ethics to discuss their state-of-the-science theoretical and empirical research on emotion and unethical behavior in organizations. The papers in this symposium indicate (1) that the emotions that people experience influence their unethical behavior and that of others and (2) that unethical behavior influences the emotions that people experience. Taken together, these papers support Aristotle's and Hume's belief in the fundamental inseparability of emotion and ethics and prompt the need for the field of business ethics to reconsider the rationalist perspective that provides the foundation for research and prescriptions to organizations.
