Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between running performance and sex, age, and body mass. Subjects were a stratified random sample from the Texas Normative data. Data were analyzed with multiple regression techniques. Results indicate better performance by males on both subsamples. Age was found to be unrelated to girls' 9-minute run performance and negatively related to their 12-minute performance. Age was related positively to boys' 9-minute performance and quadratically to 12-minute performance. Body mass was found to account for the negative relationship for girls; however, body mass did not change the relationships found for boys. Results are compared with those identified from the AAHPER Youth Fitness Test Manual (1976).
