Abstract

Poor Tammie Tomato is sad because the kids don't like her she's a vegetable, you see. Billy Banana and Beano want to be more popular too. But is Jelly Bean Joker's sugar-:filled hot tub the way to go? Annie Apple saves the day by helping her Fun and Fit recognize their own good qualities. The Fun and Fit Want to be Popular is a puppet show developed as part of REACH For Health, a cancer prevention project. It was presented to students in kindergarten through third grade as a way to encourage them to eat more fruits and vegetables. Puppets hold a great appeal for children, and can be ideal teaching aids because they make learning about nutrition entertaining and fun.! The Fun and Fit Friends was presented by students in grades 4-6. This peer teaching approach had the advantage of reinforcing the nutrition message to the older students as well. Schools were provided with puppets and script, and an adult volunteer supervised the student performers. An effective alternative approach would be for the students to make the puppets themselves. Any number of educational messages can be effectively presented using puppets. A puppet show's educational message can be enhan.ced by using the following basic educational principles: (1) keep the message simple; (2) make the message rel~vant; (3) involve the student; and (4) encourage action.
