Abstract
Abstract The role and the freedom of the musician or the conductor, if any, is, of course, not always the same; it varies in different kinds of music (jazz, classical music, pop music, raga, folk music, etc.). It is therefore important to specify which music we are dealing with; the problems of interpretation may be very different depending on what sort of music we have in mind. Moreover, music is not a static phenomenon. It is historical in the sense that the structure and texture of musical compositions have changed over the centuries. This is true also of instruments, forms of production, channels of distribution, and ways of listening, as well as of the expectations and purposes of composers, musicians, and listeners.
