Abstract

The frizzled (fz) motif[ 1 Rehn M. Pihlajaniemi T. J. Biol. Chem. 1995; 270: 4705-4711 Crossref PubMed Scopus (107) Google Scholar ]is a cysteine-rich sequence that, so far, has been found in four protein families: seven-span transmembrane receptors; type-XVIII collagen; a family of secreted frizzled-like proteins; and a metallocarboxypeptidase enzyme. Here, we show that the fz motif also occurs in two subfamilies of receptor protein tyrosine kinases and in an additional protein, which contains an LDL-receptor-class-A domain. The occurrence of the fz motif in this diverse set of proteins merits this motif's recognition as one of the many types of module found in proteins.
