Abstract

This is the opening chapter of the book and sets out the context in which Jacques Lecoq developed his approaches to physical theatre. Starting with the premiere of Jarry's 'Ubu Roi', it examines the theatrical experiments in the French theatre of the early twentieth century and the changing idea of the body in performance. Special focus is given to the work of Jacques Copeau and Antonin Artaud.
