Abstract

In this paper, I question the foundation of the French Republic and the link with linguist unity. I look at the monolithic vision of the language that prevailed under the monarchy and continued after the 1789 revolution. I specifically analyse how the paradigm of unity expressed by a unified language has at the same time oppressed minorities in France and in its former colonies, and been a major element of the Republic. I finally consider how we witness slow but important changes that challenge its basis.
