Abstract

Magnetization measurements on free (monocrystalline) powder samples of ferrimagnetic rare-earth (R) transition-metal (T) compounds provide an excellent possibility to determine the strength of the R-T exchange coupling. This is very simple if the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the R-sublattice is large in particular and the T-sublattice anisotropy can be neglected. In the present paper, the influence of non-zero T-sublattice anisotropy on the free-powder magnetization has been studied.
