Abstract

By MELINDA PIRAZZOLI The era of the Maoist tie fanwan (iron rice-bowl) is now completely over, and China's entry into a freemarket economic system has strongly attracted the attention of Sinologists engaged in historical and economics studies. It is undeniable, however, that the ones most fascinated by the opening of China's frontiers are Western and Japanese businessmen, ready to conquer the new promised land. Gone forever is the day when one could see the whole of Beijing from the romantic Fragrance Hills. Now there are skyscrapers everywhere, obstructing the observer's view. However, at a time when Chinese have the chance to become like the stars they are watching in their best-loved American soap operas, broadcast throughout the vast nation by Chinese state channels, apparently there is no longer a place for nostalgic thoughts about traditional China.
