Abstract

Assuming that people are constantly trying to improve their self-esteem helps us understand a number of the common aspects of nationalism. We identify strongly with a nation because, in today’s world, national identity offers us the greatest possibilities for increasing our sense of self-worth. We devalue other national groups because, when we compare ourselves to them, we feel more important, more moral, and more just. But why should we constantly be striving to increase our self-esteem? Is there something wrong with us?
