Abstract

Recently we prepared gelled, covalently linked rigid polyamide networks by polymerizing in solution in a single step the appropriate monomer mixture. By the correct choice of monomer size and functionality, f, we were able to prepare networks with stiff segments having average length, l 0, as short as 6.5A and as long as 208A, and rigid branchpoint (crosslink joint) functionality of 3 to 6.1,2,3 X-ray studies revealed that the dry or swollen networks and their pre-gel precursors were always amorphous. This work will be limited to systems with stiff segments 32A and 38.5A in length and with f = 3 branchpoints. Typical stiff segments with fully reacted branchpoints are shown in structures I and II below:
