The Fourth Category: Traditional Jewish Monotheism, Christological Monotheism, and Oneness Pentecostalism

Abstract

Oneness Pentecostal perspectives of Jewish and Christian Monotheism are central to this chapter, which establishes why Oneness theology can no longer be relegated to the corridors of ‘heresy’. It shows that Oneness Pentecostal views of the relationship between Yahweh and Jesus is a renewal of ancient Jewish thoughts about God. The Oneness scholars David K. Bernard, Kulwant S. Boora, and David S. Norris are at the forefront of Oneness Theology, and though a Lutheran theologian, Christopher Barina Kaiser’s methodological approach to Jewish-Christian Monotheism fits within the parameters of Oneness Theology: he is featured in this chapter. The chapter shows how using a combinatorial approach drawn from the other patterns affirm Oneness Pentecostal views about Yahweh and Jesus as a valid argument within the framework of Christological Monotheism. It applies the concept of numeric identity, clarify what Oneness Pentecostals mean by the word ’person’, and claims closer affinity to Second Temple Jewish views of God.
