Abstract

The King in ganting his charter to the French West India Company had stipulated that the company should send out and maintain a sufficient number of missionaries, but only upon the pressing insistence of the governor, M. Du Parquet, a few Jesuits were sent out to Martinique in 1640; but these could only supply the cur6s of St. Pierre and two neighbouring parishes. The Jesuits and others who followed them got no support from the planters and had to maintain themselves by the profits of plantations which they purchased and cultivated for the purpose.2
