Abstract

The genus Rhaphidophora Long, Fuge & Smith is presently composed of two species, the generitype R. elegans Long, Fuge & Smith from the Maastrichtian of the Moreno Shale, California and R. danica Fenner from the lowermost Eocene of the Fur Formation, Denmark. In this paper both species are described and illustrated with SEM and LM photomicrographs and the genus is placed in the family Heliopeltaceae. The stratigraphic range of each species is given together with comments on its palaeoenvironment and geographical distribution. The relationship of Rhaphidophora with other members of the Heliopeltaceae is discussed in particular to the genus Mammidion Long, Fuge & Smith and the species Actinodiscus horologium Brun and Actinoptychus pulchellus var. tenera Grove & Sturt (=A. tenera (Grove & Sturt) Grunow).
