Abstract
The conditions for the formation of amorphous tricalcium phosphate at 37°C have been investigated. The limiting value of the ion activity product Ia of tricalcium phosphate for the formation of the amorphous precipitate is given by pIa = 3 pCa + 2 pHPO4 − 2pH = 1.60 ± 0.07; this value is independent of pH, ionic strength, and concentrations of sodium, magnesium, and oxalate. The observations may be interpreted by assuming that amorphous tricalcium phosphate consists of nuclei of whitlockite.
