Abstract
The article examines the history of the classical guitar performing school in China, closely related to the name of the leading guitar teacher Chen Zhi. In addition, the author makes an attempt to reveal the national identity of the Chinese performing tradition; it is associated, fi rst of all, with a special attitude to sound and sound production coming from the national culture of performing on the pipa and liuqin. In the Chinese guitar school, a special place belongs to the extremely popular guitarist Xuefei Yang today. In addition to her actual performance merits, she holds a prominent place among the popularisers of Chinese music in the international audience.
