Abstract

The formation of rotating plasmas in hydrogen has been studied with high-speed photographic, electrical and magnetic diagnostic techniques. The ranges of pressure and magnetic field intensity were wide enough for both a `spoke' and a uniform `disc' mode of plasma production to be investigated. The effects of magnetic field and pressure on the form are discussed.A mechanism is considered in which plasma motion in the `spoke' mode is controlled by electromagnetically driven shockwaves.
