Abstract

Heating a clean Ti(0001) surface in ethylene at 450°C results in formation of a surface layer showing a carbide-like Auger spectrum. This surface exhibits an unusual LEED pattern that can be ascribed to the formation of an epitaxial layer of TiC(111) upon the Ti substrate.
