Abstract
Large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) have recently been held responsible for certain IR emission bands and visible region diffuse absorption bands observed in the interstellar medium (ISM). A mechanism for the fragmentation and eventual destruction of PAH species in the ISM is suggested. This involves a number of excitation processes that could lead to their double ionization in the ISM. The possibility of fragmentation of the doubly-charged PAHs by Coulomb explosion processes involving rapid direct dissociation or by tunnelling processes is examined in the context of the relevant cosmic timescale and events in the ISM.
