Abstract
An outline of the history and evolution of the Sprengel-Babo pump is presented. A pump based on the original design was developed that can overcome large pressure differences and that is capable of evacuating containers to the vapor pressure of mercury. This apparatus substitutes for the positive-displacement Toepler pump usually employed in sealed circulating and metering vacuum systems and performs as an economical, low-capacity, high-vacuum pump.
