HUBBARD, professor of mathematics at Cornell, received his BA from Harvard and his Ph.D. from the University of Paris. He has been a strong believer in using computers in mathematics since he made the first pictures of the Mandelbrot set on his first computer, an Apple 2. He believes that teaching and research enrich each other. His research interests include complex analysis, Teichmüller theory, and differential equations.
