Abstract
Although insulated circular cylindrical overhead conductors (cables) are used extensively in the distribution of electric power, there is a dearth of information on their heat transfer performance with forced convection. This paper describes an experimental study of the Nusselt number/Reynolds number relationship for a 15 mm diameter insulated conductor. For 583 ⩾ 7923 (0.69 – 8.24 ms −1), the Nusselt number is identical to that for an uninsulated circular cylindrical conductor at the same Reynolds number, i.e. Nu = 0.583 Re 0.471 for Re ⩽ 5000 and Nu = 0.148 Re 0.633 for Re > 5000. The variation of the temperature over the circumference of the insulation is similar to that for an uninsulated conductor at the same Reynolds number.
