Abstract

The Khor al Bazam is a large lagoonal inlet on the Trucial Coast of the Persian Gulf. It is floored with carbonate sediments in which the principal components are shell debris, foraminiferids and aragonitic mud. The distribution of the dead foraminiferids is discussed and trends in distribution are used to subdivide the area into several subregions. Representatives of the superfamily Miliolacea make up a major part of the populations and the dominant forms are species of Quinqueloculina, Triloculina and peneroplids. Black foraminiferids are found in the western Khor al Bazam. Living foraminiferids appear not to live on the surface of the sediment. Comparisons are drawn between the Khor al Bazam and other Trucial Coast lagoons. It is seen that they differ physiographically and environmentally and that these differences are reflected in the dead foraminiferid populations.
