Abstract

The focal plane detector for the QMG/2 magnetic spectrograph of the K.V.I. consists of two systems, placed beside each other. Each system has an active area of 52×6 cm 2 and consists of two gas proportional two-dimensional position sensitive detectors with a scintillator. Each of the position sensitive detectors has a vertical, 6 cm high drift space. The drift field is defined by horizontal strips of gold, evaporated on thin mylar foils. Below the drift space a proportional counter is mounted. The horizontal position is determined by charge division. For α-particles from a 241Am source, an intrinsic horizontal position resolution of 0.6 mm has been measured. In experiments the resolution is better than 1 mm, which is somewhat better than the intrinsic spectrograph resolution.
