Abstract

Throughout history various hand-held objects have become identified with authority. Thus, while in state some pharaohs held a symbolic shepherd's crook and a grain flail, and today high clergymen still use a ceremonial shepherd's crook. The kings of Europe had their scepters, orbs, state swords, maces, and staves. Military officers have carried batons, swords, and swagger sticks.
