Abstract
The discussion is presented under the following section headings: measuring heat flow; heat flow and plate tectonics; global heat flow; the thickness of the lithosphere; and thermal history of the earth. A global heat-flow map was drawn on the basis of thousands of individual field measurements on continents and ocean floors. The heat-flow pattern is interpreted in terms of plate tectonics. JGB)
