Abstract

Aqueous solutions of polyacrylamide, polyethylene oxide and 'Kelzan' (Xanthan gum, a polysaccharide) have been studied in flow through straight pipes of circular cross-section, through bent pipes of circular cross-section, through porous media and in the annular gap between rotating concentric cylinders. The objectives of the work are described. A summary of the behaviour of macromolecules in solution and details of their structure are also given; these will be used in subsequent discussion to form phenomenological theories.
