Abstract

The cross-flow induced vibration of a single flexible cylinder in a six-row, in-line square array of otherwise rigid cylinders, with pitch-to-diameter ratio of 1·5, has been investigated. Experiments have been done in both air- and water-flow; in air-flow with two levels of upstream turbulence. Measurements were made of the cylinder vibration amplitudes in the in-flow and cross-flow directions, for different positions of the flexible cylinder in the array and for different values of mechanical damping. Interstitial flow velocity measurements were also made in both rigid and flexible arrays of cylinders.
