Abstract
Understanding membrane transport processes: The ABC transporters, a highly versatile class of transmembrane proteins, perform various import and export functions. Up until now, hardly any structural information was available to understand the molecular principles behind the function of these transporters. The first X-ray crystal structure (see picture) of an ABC transporter provides insights into the three-dimensional architecture and possible mechanisms of action. In the future, it will serve as a platform for the design of experiments and the evaluation of the transport mechanisms that have been proposed during an era without structural information.
