Abstract

Abstract“Wuthering Heights” was given its first television broadcast on March 7th, 1948, and I was there, among the confusing contraptions of the studio in Alexandra Palace, with a watching brief for the Bronte Society.It seems a far cry from High Withens to the late Victorian splendours of Alexandra Palace, and a much further one from the private processes of Emily Bronte's mind to the cerebral artifice of television. Perhaps I prepared for it, as an imaginative leap, with forebodings more acute than any the Brontes would have known.
