Abstract
After hostilities commenced in August 1914 the Admiralty's secret intelligence unit, Room 40, stepped-up its monitoring and codebreaking operations against Germany, providing the British armed forces with tide-turning information about the enemy's plans. This paper highlights Room 40's operations from the outbreak of hostilities to the war's end.
