Abstract
Chloroform anesthesia was introduced by Simpson of Edinburgh in November, 1847. In the United States, this agent first successfully used for surgical anesthesia by C. A. Harris of Baltimore on about December 20, 1847. Only two months passed, however, before chloroform anesthesia claimed its first fatality in this country. This case happened to Mrs. Simmonds of Cincinnati on February 23, 1848.
