Abstract

This paper treats the three collections of maps which set the standards of style, format, and content for the first centuries of atlas publication: Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, 1570; Braun and Hogenbcrg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum, 1572; and Waghenaer's Spieghel der Zeevnerdt, 1584. Topics examined include ancient forms of atlases, their makers and circumstances; the first atlases, their editors, engravers, and printers; their physical aspect and content; and their historical influence.
