Abstract

To the Editor:— AMA News, Jan 25, 1965, says: medical education was born in 1765, with the founding of the School of Medicine of the University of Philadelphia in Philadelphia. Your attention is invited to the fact that American medical education was born in 1580, with the founding of the Antigua Facultad de of the University of Mexico in Mexico City. Doctor don Juan de la Fuente was Catedratico (Professor) de Prima de Medicina de la Real Universidad de Mexico, 1580-1595, but native medicine was considered heresy and the great libraries of the Aztecs and Mayans were burned unread. I consider the first recorded event in Mexican medicine the Badianus Manuscript in the Barberini Collection in the Vatican Library, compiled by Martin de la Cruz and Juannes Badianus in 1552.
