Abstract

The finite strip method in the elastic-static analysis of thin plate structures with various edge restraints is considered in this paper. An in-depth examination of the displacement model relevant to thin plate and plane stress behaviour of the finite strip is carried out. The solution of the equilibrium differential equations is obtained by means of convergent series expansions, utilizing suitable orthogonal displacement functions. The entity of errors related to the size of the strip is analyzed and convergence criteria are furnished. A computer procedure based on an improvement and extension of the well known displacement approach is given. Some numerical examples show that the procedure provides good results with low discretization and computational effort.
